Again a great event like the first AFS camp loaded with different games and activities. including races, tournaments and swimming in the pacific ocean.
so, now enough of long past events and back to some very recent happenings.
first things first.
After Julie i went to stay with Andrew, Cathy and their daughter Kate(14). very nice funny people. i enjoyed my time at their place very much. they have a dog and a cat and a small messy house but are very loving and great fun. a laughed a lot with them. they all work and go to school in wellington and therefore leave the house very early in the mornings which left me alone with the dog i had to put in the bathroom before i left to school. this is because she barks when she is outside too long. and the neighbours don’t like that.
kate goes to a catholic school in wellington and her school was chosen to carry the flags at a big rugby tournament opening ceremony. this gave me the opportunity to go and have a look when they practiced at the westpac stadium in wellington. i didn’t have tickets for the tournament itself though. the event is called the sevens. it is played with rugby rules but only with seven players and seven minutes of play time each side. this makes it a very quick event of only two days. two days in which all young adults in wellington dress up and get drunk. i did neither of them because police controls of younger-than-eighteen looking people are of a high frequency during this two days. and i didn’t feel like dressing up either.
and then on the second day of the sevens there came the reason why i couldn’t stay at andrew and cathy's house directly form finland. OLLI. he is a very nice guy and we had and still have a lot of fun together. we shared a room for about two weeks and it was really messy in that room.
on sunday two weeks ago we had a AFS chapter meeting at andrew’s house with all the students that arrived last august (johnson, anna, annie and me) welcoming all the new students (wendy, olli and paulina). the janssens were there too with their daughter rebecca who left last friday to germany. right after the meeting when they were at home they called sue the upper hutt valley chapter president and responsible person that they would like to have me as their new student and before i knew it i was in another family again. THE JANSSENS
family janssen live in a very nice house in silverstream another suburb of upper hutt. and again i can still go to school by bike. i live here with john, christine, michael(14) and sophie(11). very nice people! the son is just a bit quiet. but i think that’s just how he is.
i started back to school about two weeks ago with a new subject that immediately became my favourite one. DRAMA. i love it. good people and a good teacher and its just great fun to improvise in english. i won’t be here for the big drama production at the end of the year but there is an assessment before that which contains performing a monologue. today we got our monologues. all of them about one A4 page long. we have to perform them on stage and design and direct the whole little scene for ourselves. a big challenge but a good one.
i am still member of the dragon boating team but i have been promoted. remember how i said that I’m in the second team and that i think that they don’t take any international students in the first team? however, i was wrong. last week my trainer came up to me and asked me if i wanted to join the first team. of course i said yes which means that i can go to the nationals in auckland. isn’t that great. you go to another country, to another school and after 6 month you’re in a team and can compete for the whole school at the nationals. something i wouldn’t even have dreamt of in switzerland!! that’s just great.
now tomorrow i have training before school and after school. first muscles building in the gym and then paddling on the boat in wellington harbour. the last training on the boat was great. you forget about everything. nothing matters anymore. just you and the paddle and the team in the boat. and you have saltwater all over you and it might be cold but you don’t care. all you think is 'keep paddling'. that’s just great. i never had this experience before.

i live at

22a Chatsworth road

Silverstream

Upper Hutt

New Zealand

greetings from new zealand
dario

Time machine

It is time to once again send some news back home to Switzerland. A lot of things happened here despite the fact that I didn’t write a blog for a long, long time. Luckily I write my diary every day so I can easily look up all the major events of the past few weeks. So come and join me on my little voyage through time.

Friday the 30th of November:
It was a rainy cloudy spring day.we international students from upper hutt college went to Mt. Bruce just past Fetherston with mrs. Howes and her Japanese husband who came to the Tongariro crossing with us too. Mt. Bruce is more like a hill than like a mountain and it was also not the actual reason why we went there. The reason was a little wildlife park with enclosures for native bird and plants, some creeks and ditches and of course a Kiwi tunnel. Because the kiwi birds are nocturnal they always get to stay in tunnels and caves when they are captured and living I a zoo or wildlife park. So we spent some time there watching what the live nest camera captured(in our case a lonely egg in the nest). We had a something to eat and drink in the park café and looked around in the souvenir shop before hitting the road again to Masterton. On the way there we stopped at a war memorial which commemorates the Japanese soldiers that where looked after by the surrounding community in the second world war. Very interesting for the 4 Japanese people we had with us. Not so much for me. In Masterton we went to the ‘Paua shell’ factory. Paua is a very big sea shell with a hard thick crust. But the if the crust is removed it reveales a very nice fragile shell which shimmers in turquoise. Jewelry and all sorts of souvenir is made out of it an the traditional Maori carvings are often decorated with it. For a certain reason I didn’t go back to upper hutt with all the other international students.
In my next blog your gonna hear about a British agent and why the Paua shell factory wasn’t even the third most exciting thing this day.

Greetings from a sunny country down under

say 'welcome' to finland

hello my dear friends and members of the family.
i would like to announce in this little blog which is soon to be followed by a bigger one that i have again changed to another host family due to complications with julie. because the upper hutt valley chapter has much to do with the searching of host families for the international students that arrive at the beginning of february they were not yet able to find me a new place. this doesnt mean im living on the street. no, im living with andrew my support coordinator his wife kathy and his 14 year old daughter kate. i have a very good time here. but im not able to stay here for very long because one of the students that arrive in february (olli from finland) will be living here for one year. i might still be here in this family for some weeks with him. but i dont mind and i hope he doesnt either. i can go with the others to pick him up form the airport and experience the other side of the game too. something not many exchange students can do. great!

so this would be my new address:

<span dear friends and family members. christmas time is arising all around us. christmas trees in shopping malls and the windows. mannequins dressed up as angels and santa clauses. woderful. last sunday i was in wellington with some friends to attend the chrism's parade. the main road was closed for cars to drive through so it was a bit like fasnachtsomzog in lucerne. different groups of society dressed up and performed their little show. but most of them just sat on their wagons dressed as santas and dancing around more or less motivated. but that was understandable for it was very hot. the range of groups was very wide. it reached from 'a' for amateur cheerleader to 'f' for fallun gong brass band. it was very entertaining.
last wednesday i went to a three day tramping trip with the school. this was one of the many things we do during the time we have the alternative school program with the other international students that dont do the exams. we where about 7 international students that went on the trip. with us where three adults. mrs. howes (she teaches japanese at our school and is in charge of the program) a japanese man and kiwi man (they are both into photography so we stopped at different places on the way up to national park to take beautiful pictures of the scenery). it took us around 6 hours to drive up to national park because as i said we stopped at different places not just to take pictures but also to buy vegis and sweet potatoes for the barbecue we enjoyed this evening. the little motel we lived in in national park was very comfortable and it reminded me of a swiss ski hut because there where old pairs of skies attached to the walls and an old fireplace stood in the middle of the living room at a wall. this is because close to the place is one of the big ski resorts of the north island. the one on mount ruapehu. a volcano which erupted recently. national park itself is a very small village with not much to see. for those of you who read my blog regularly: this is the place where i had the long break on my 12 hour train trip to auckland. remember? just a little restaurant at the train station and then a long, long road and nothing else. yes, that's the place. national park is a village but as the name says also a national park. this park was a gift to the nation by the local maoris. they gave the land to the nation in 1880. and the only condition for the nation was to make it a national park. the maori of course didnt just voluntarily give up a beautiful peace of land. but they believed in group ownership rather than in individual one. they where afraid that the english settlers would split the land up in many, many small compartments for farmers and private persons. thats why the maoris gave it as a gift and made it the 4th national park in the world at that time. the second day was the day of our great tramp. the 'tongariro crossing'. people form all over the world come here to do this tramp and now that ive done it i know why!!
we got up at 7am to eat some scrambled egg and to pack our clothes and lunches and big water bottles. the owner of the motel drove us to the starting point of the tamp in a white van. we got off the van and surrounded by a volcanic landscape with small bushes on infertile soils we put some suncream on and started off at 8.45am. the tramp was incredible. i have never seen anything like that before. to be so close to a volcano is amazing. we walked passed blue lakes and mineral pools and through moon like landscapes. and johnson touched snow for the first time in his life. we made snowballs and fought each other. eight and a half hours later we arrived at the other car park where we were picked up again. not willing to do another step on this day i went to bed early after the chicken curry because i had a head ache. maybe because of the heat we had the whole day long or maybe because i didnt sleep enough last week or maybe because of both. the next day we got up at 8.30am i had a shower ate breakfast and packed my things again. we put our stuff into the red van we had come to national park with. we headed to tauronga first. a small village close to lake taupo which is a huge volcanic crater. we went to a hot mineral pool there. but it wasnt excieting at all. it was indoor on a camping site and a hot pool was the last thing i needed with my head still aching. so i just lay on the soil outside the pool, enjoyed the sun and listened to the birds that enjoyed the spring with me. after that we headed back home. stopping just to eat something at subway and for a toilet break. i was back home on friday at 5.30pm where a happy family waited for me. im really part of them now. juhui. ah yes and i cook every week. and they really like it. even the fuzzy kids.

i wish you all a merry christmas season

OK, this is gonna be a long blog again. you are going to read about many things ive done recently. and i might even add some pictures of events ive been through and persons ive bee with. i dont know if im gonna finish this blog tonight but i will publish it before wednesday. i promise. ok im gonna start just about around the time i left my welcome family. maybe even a bit further back.

about one week before i left them micaela and cherise had a home party. because all clubs are just for people 18 home parties have taken over the role of the place where younger people get drunk. and so did i. it was nothing bad. i mean i had a great time. everything was very funny and i had probably the best conversations with young people ever since ive come here. so i leaned to know many people. it really makes talking to people easier. another thing i learned about being drunk is that the best place to get drunk is at home. because you can just go to bed when you feel like and you dont have to walk home with a head ache. but no worries i had my self under control i was just in an extraordinary good mood and i didnt vomit(gall eliane :) . so really no reason to worry for all parents and grandparents.

i spent the weekend with johnsons family because fiona and tony where at the beach house. it was a long weekend thats why and johnson had asked me before that if i want to come camping with them. so of course i said yes. the time with his family started at their friends house with a BBQ and a board game named 'cash flow' on saturday evening. it reminded me of an advanced version of monopoly and took a long, long time. but if was fun. the plan was to go camping in paekakariki on sunday but jenny, johnons host mother, had a cold and so we choose plan b which in this case was: drive to paekakariki, examine the camping site, go to the beach ,collect shells build a dam with drift wood to hold a little river back then eat the lunch we had made, drive another 20 minutes to paraparumu go to the indoor pool and play on a playground before driving back home again. hui, that was a busy day. i still wonder how jenny managed to keep up with our program. the next morning we went to the movies in lower hutt and i saw 'hair spray' (what do you think about it, peter?) for the second time in just one month. it was still good but ive had enough jhon travolta in the role of e woman for a while now. after the movie (dont ask me why we went to the movies on this beautiful day it was) we of course drove back home where sue (siehe personenliste) was waiting for us right in front of the red brick house johnson lives in. in her car with the pink steering wheel and the pile of blankets. she followed us into the house. had a quick talk to the family. she recommended the 'spirit of adventure'-trip (sailing trip) to me and johnson just before she took me for a ride through upper hutt and beyond. now that we were alone she told me what was really going on. she had a conversation with fiona about me and it turned out that... too much pressure... too much... too less space... privacy... tony moving in... finance... just welcome family... anyway. after this i must say beautiful (as i said wonderful weather this day) ride through the 'lord of the rings' landscapes we both agreed that it would be best for me to change the family now.

and now im gonna tell you some things i did in the last few week. i dont exactly remember when they where(i could look it up in my diary, which i now write every day) but i think it is that you know what i did rather then when i did it.

i was at a stock car racing in palmerston north with johnson and his family. there are stock car racings in upper hutt too but they are later in the season. the stock car racing started at 7 pm. and we left upper hutt at 11 am. johnsons family has two little daughters thats why they often do excursions like this and on the way to places like palmerston north they get off the car at least 2 or 3 times to visit a new playground or an old one or a special one with a little train with cheering kids on it. in palmerston north we had enough time to walk around through the city. its a nice little place. like all cities in new zealand the shops are arranged around a park where all international and new zealand students eat their lunch. there are often some old buildings that look very european on the main road. from there the buildings start to decrease in height and youll soon find your self in a labyrinth of neat little houses. most of them wooden with a garage and a mowed lawn. industry is concentrated on little spots spread throughout the villages and so are cricket and rugby fields, characterized by the very high poles of the goals. we went to an exhibition about a cookie factory which is close to palmerston north because the national rugby museum was closed(what a pity). the stock car racing was great fun. there were several disciplines from big cars that sprinkled us with little mud pieces from the track to small cars. and from motorcycles without breaks to motorcycles with two drivers. a great variety. johnson and i used to bet which car is going to win and we couldnt stop laughing when a car we picked didnt start because its engine shut down before the race even begun. to evening was celebrated with a big firework at the and of the show. after this breathtaking, loud event in the stadium of palmerston north we drove back home. a wonderful two hours ride through the night with nice music from my ipod. oh how i love it to drive through the wonderful landscape with some good music in my ears. those are always my happiest moments.

what else did i do recently? hmm... ah, yes! i went to wellington to see the parliament building from the inside. i was there with many afs students from around wellington although i just planned to go there with johnson and anna. but somehow we were not the only ones that wanted to use this chance. the parliament building it self was a bid disappointment because we were just allowed to walk through the hallways that looked all the same. and no pictures where aloud to be taken. luckily it was fro free. but it was cool to see al our friends but the group split up soon after the visit in the most important building in new zealand.

a week after that we were again in wellington. this time to see the big firework in wellington harbor. the atmosphere reminded me of the seenachtsfest in lucerne. it was very nice. but short too. the started it with firework fired off a helicopter that flew over the harbor and then continued with 18 minutes of consecutive colorful explosions shot off two barks. the firework was on a holiday on which the whole nation celebrates a man who tried to blow up the parliament many years ago. but he had been stopped. now i still dont know if we were celebrating his attempt to blow something up or the people that stopped him from blowing something up.

during my time at julie walters house ive been to the marae which is the maori's holy/sacred place. a marae contains several buildings like a community room or better a hall a big kitchen and some have a kindergarten too where they speak only maori with the children. and there is the actual marae which is the house where they actually have their services and their funerals. ive never been in this building yet but ive been to community dinners. a wonderful experience.

everything is fine at school. today was my last school day because the other students start their one week study holidays on thursday an then two weeks of end-of-year exams follow. the school provides all international students that dont do these exams with a program containing bone carving, horse riding, history lessons(NZ, Maori) and several one or more day trips.
something im really happy about in the moment is that im now in a dragon boating team. after three weeks of evaluation training they finally named the teams. a great opportunity to make friends because we do a lot of teambuilding work. almost like in a theatre group.

so i hope you have a better idea of what im up to now.

have a nice day. dario from style="color:#ffcc33;">nice to finally see you again. :)
i know its been a long time since i wrote my last post. many things happened in this period of time. to make it clear for all of you: i changed my host family. this of course is nothing bad even though it sounds very inconvenient. it might be bad for some people that break up with their family in anger and after arguments. but it wasnt form me. it was just something that sneaked up from behind and one they it was clear for both parties. there were several indicators that pointed into this direction. i dont want to explain this here on my blog. it would be far too long to describe ind im sure i will still remember when im back home so for all of you who want to know details about how exactly it all happened just ask me and ill tell you verbally.
now i do have a new address and thats the following one:

Dario Brander
11 Kentucky Street

my new home is only about 5 minutes by bike from my old one. so thats a very good thin and i can still go to school by bike and i can still go there with johnson. my family is very nice. i would say nicer than the first one because thei never had an student before. well they had annie before a girl from check republic but only for 3 month and it didnt work out with her because she was too quiet. and i think this wont happen with me. it is again a mother with two children without a partner this time. the kids, caitiann and marshall are 12 and 10 years old. they were very shy at first and are now opening up. i integrated very well in the two weeks ive been here now and we have lots of fun. i do well at school :) and improve my social contacts rapidly.
so thats it for today because i feel tired and my head aches a bit. i didnt sleep much last night because was in wellington last night to see the fireworks. but more about that and other things i did lately soon this week.

so, here is my long expected auckland-blog:

on saturday the 29th of september me and johnson were invited over to annas house because katharina (not my host sister but another swiss AFS-student who’s stationed in new plymouth and spent her holidays around wellington) had a night free to visit us in our beautiful little upper hutt. so i spent a not so long evening with chatting and eating at annas house. not so long because i went home at 8 o'clock. this was because i had to get up at 5 am. next morning to catch the 6 o'clock train to wellington. because it was daylight safe the same day it was actually 4 am. when i had to get up. i was alone this morning because all the others were at the beach house. so i got up and prepared to leave. i put all the snacks i have bought in my backpack and i put my toothbrush into my toilet bag(the one gabi girsberger gave me before i left. thank you for that. i thought i would never need it : ) but now...) which i appreciate very much. after having packed everything i locked the door and left out to where it was dark and unknown... upper hutt was still asleep when i made my way to the train station. only accompanied by my wine red suitcase and my beloved backpack. i was concerned about the loud rattle sound the little wheels of my suitcase where making. i didnt want to wake all people up. but i arrived in wellington without any problems. in wellington train station i went to the ticket window to get the tickets we have preordered. as i waited for my turn i saw eliane(swiss AFS-student). i was afraid she might have forgotten the daylight save but she was there. i got the tickets and we brought our big bags to a place where they collected all the baggage of the passengers waiting for the ‘overlander’ train. soon after that we said good bye to elianes host mother who brought her to the station and entered the train which soon after that left the station for a 12 hours trip over amazing landscapes, along shores and islands, beaches, rainforests, mountains and volcanoes through tunnels, fens and suburbs up to auckland. we stopped at many different places.
in 'national park' we had a 45 minutes stop to go outside the train and stretch our legs. this place is really in the middle of nowhere. just a long, long road that leads to the centre of this small village. the only exciting thing for the people living there is probably the two trains that cross this place once a day to stop and let heaps of tourists out which then enter the old station restaurant that is probably the most important economical institution of this sad place. after about half an hour later we reached the world famous 'raurimu-spirale'. train fanatics from all over the place come to new zealand just to do this descent of about 90 meters. they had to a spiral tunnel to descent with the train in this narrow valley. this engineering feature was opened in 1929 and is still working well. it isnt that amazing. but there was a lot of information about it given through the trains loud speaking installation. we were often provided with historical backgrounds as we passed through the corresponding areas of the country. another indicator for this train to be a very touristy kind of thing.

we arrived in with 45 minutes delay in aucklands very flash new train station at 8.15pm. the station is called 'britomart' which i think its funny because it sounds like an italian supermarket. we got our luggage back and went out on the place where jenny(eliane's host aunty) waited for us. we got into her car and drove off through the rainy dark city. i was reminded of my first evening here in NZ when fiona and cherise picked me up and we drove through the rainy night from wellington to upper hutt. and as then we could only see traffic lights and the break lights of the other vehicles. we went to bed pretty early after having met harry(jennys husband) in their pretty house in ‘mt. eden’.

the next day was our shopping day. we slept in till 12am. in the morning. sleeping in was one of the luxuries we allowed us every day we spent in auckland. we caught the bus to britomart and then walked up queens street which is the main shopping street in auckland. we were going from shop to shop when it started to rain in such an intensity that we had to walk very close to the shop windows to not get wet. even though there were shelters. so we decided to go to the nearby auckland art gallery. a european style building. we saw some international modern art. it was all about the topic ' what is mystery'. but eliane didnt like it and because she is very interested in arts she went to another gallery with old new zealand art and maori portraits. i didnt want to see that so i walked further around and went to an asian hairdresser to get my hair cut. after we reunited aigain we went to a cafe to drink a hot chocolate and eat a banana bread. i was trying to write my postcards when a man started to talk to us(and didnt stop until he has told us his whole entire life story. but we didnt know this at the beginning of our conversation). we first thought: "oh cool someone is talking to us." but then... you know... yes and this was already the first day and we went home to eat dinner with jenny. harry didnt eat with us because he was sick and stayed in his bed for the whole week.

on tuesday, we went to kelly tarltons underwater world which is placed at the beach somewhere west of downtown auckland. we went there with lea(a swiss girl from auckland chapter) but we were earlier than lea and so we walked along the shore and out a footbridge to a yacht-racing starting point. the aquarium wasnt worth the 22 dollars we had to pay for it. there was a small antarctica exhibition a poor penguin cage and a shark tank we could walk through in a tube. they took a picture of us in front of an antarctic scenery at the beginning and in the souvenir shop we had the possibility to purchase this picture for 28(!!!). of course we didnt. but i bought gifts for all my host family members. a t-shirt for cherise toe socks for micaela and to different special sauces, one strawberry-chocolate and a kiwifruit sauce. and that was the second day. i know it doesnt sound like much but it took us always very long to get to one place and back to jennys house again and in addition auckland isnt very save after night falls. so we went home ate another dinner without harry watched 'matrix' on the television and some 'simpsons' episodes.

on wednesday we went to the zoo. we paid 14 dollars and got a far better show than we got in the aquarium. auckland zoo is proud of the authentic surroundings it provides the exotic animals with. all the animals seemed very happy and we enjoyed it very much there. in the evening we took the bus to ‘howick’ where we were invited to by lea. she showed us around at the small beach near her house and we ate a wonderful lasagna together with her family. we were playing cards with leas host brother and his friend when jenny came over and picked us up. that of course was a very nice thing to do because it isnt an ordinary thing to pick people up at the other end of the city. even not for new zealanders. the only bad thing about meeting lea was that she constantly spoke to us in swiss german even though we texted her in english.

thursday was our last day and the only day without any raindrops at all. we decided to go to the auckland museum which is similar to tepapa in wellington. we took the bus but got off it earlier than we usually did. so just shortly before the university. we walked over a very high bridge from which we could see over several highways down to the harbor, past a huge, modern hospital and through a very nice park with playgrounds and a cricket field. in the middle of this park on a hill is the museum which is a classicism styled building. we saw an exhibition about all the wars that new zealand took part in from the very first wars of the settlers against the maori tribes to the vietnam war. there where also sections with modern art and design and a big room all about volcanoes. after that we went back to queens street to go shopping. for the second time. i first wanted to buy shoes but ended up with two polo shirts for 50 NZ$.
jenny took us up on 'one-tree-hill' which is a big hill(a former volcano like most of the big hills around auckland). there really was one tree on this hill because when the settlers burned and cut all the trees down to receive land for farming they left one tree standing. but this tree has been cut down by maoris who wanted saw it as a symbol of settlement or something. but we had a amazing view from up there. and thats the reason why we havent been on the sky tower which is the most popular landmark of auckland.

on friday we had to get up very early in the morning because it was already the day of our departure. jenny brought us to the britomart station and we left without any further complications. the way back to wellington was pretty much the same like the way up to auckland. of course. we saw again heaps of sheep. and i can tell u when ever u go to a restaurant order a new zealand lamb. they are so happy down here. and do you know why? its the space they have. incredibly much!!!

have a nice time. greetings dario first holiday week is almost at its end. but i was very active. i did lots of community service.
in fact i looked after chilredn who took part in a holiday program. this is something upper hutt primary school organises to give children a place to stay while their parents are at work. all i had to do was playing with the children and watch that they dont beat each other up. on monday we had our introduction camp. everybody introduced everybody and we played lots of games with them. on tuesday we took them to the cinema in lower hutt too see 'surfs up'. this is a animated movie with lots of animals(mostly penguins) that surf up and down big waves. nothing we havent had on a screen before. not very excieting but the kids liked it and thats what counted this week. on tuseday we had a DVD day. on wednesday we planned to go to a nearby farm to see how thing work there and what animals live like and just what its like to be a farmer. but we couldnt do it because the weather was just too bad for an excursion like that. so we went to the movies again and saw 'ratatouille' which is again a animated movie. but a brilliant one(if you want to know more about it then go on this web page: http://disney.go.com/disneypictures/ratatouille). today we went bowling in petone which is very close to wellington bay. it was very cool but also very stressful because we were absolutely not the only holiday group how went bowling today. so we had to be careful not to loose our kids and not to take kids with us on the bus that dont belong to our group. we always played games with them in the school hall before and after the daily activities. and today we could play outside after the trip to petone(you can find petone in google earth).

after the i finished up the program today i went to the shopping mall with anna and johnson because he wanted to get his hair cut. and im considering this to but i first had to get some ideas out of a hairdresser magazine. i now no what i want but i couldnt get it cut today because they were all booked out. so ill probably get it done up in auckland.

yesterday i learned something new about kiwi culture. you cant buy tupperware here in any store. yesterday micaela told me that fiona is gonna have a party with other women at our place. i tough: well im gonna stay in my room and read something. because i thought they might not want me to attend their women party. whe fiona came home i asked her if she celebrates something special with the other women. but she laughed and told me that they are going to have a tupperware party. at a tupperware party there is one very important person. the tupperware woman which is a woman who goes from party to party with a huge suitcase full of tupperware things. really everything u can imagine. so there were lots of friends of fiona coming over to make their orders and to eat something. the tupperware woman even makes some desserts using the tupperware things. it was like a tupperware commercial in our very own kitchen. im sure thomas would have loved it. all those little gadgets you can use in the kitchen. and all of them have lifelong guarantee!

so thats whats new

dario

My September. Pretty much all of it.

hello all together. ah there are so many things to tell u right now. i now have time to write u because we have spring holidays in the moment. first something about what ive recently done at school. well in english we do research about what language techniques are frequently used in advertisements. thats why we all choose a topic which we want to base our research on. i first took insurances because i expected insurance advertisements to have lots of text on them. and yes they did but we were supposed to collect at least 12 advertisements and i just could not find that much advertisements. well, there were fantastic commercials on TV but thats not what i needed. so i changed my topic to lip-gloss (to tonys great surprise. haha). but this was great because, first of all, there is lots of words and language techniques used in lip-gloss and secondly i have to sisters with lots of girly magazines with heaps of lip-gloss ads in it. that was great. thats it so far about english. In geography we talk about developed and developing countries and work out what a developed country is defined by. i love this topic. what i didnt like was the aids excurse we had. i think it is a very important part to learn but i had this before and we had to write an assessment on it. In human biology we have everything about the excretory system and the kidneys. cooing is good but not creative (i miss thomas. he knows why). and theory is absolute stupid because it is all about writing down which sauce goes with which finger food and stupid things like that. sports is ok. its all about having fun. much less serious than in switzerland.
On friday the 14th of september i went to the movies with fiona and micaela. we watched 'hairspray'. it is a beautiful musical with john travolta in the role of a big fat woman. this alone is reason enough to go and see this movie. i can really recommend this movie to all of u who miss the 60s and can bear the kitsch we know from 'grease'. the next morning sue( the AFS-support coordinator of the upper hutt chapter) came to visit me and my host family (actually there was just fiona and me) to have a quick chat with us about our relationship. ah, it was wonderful to talk to each other so honestly and i think im in the right family. it is now sure that i stay with fiona, tony, cherise and micaela till after christmas. if i change the family then or if i stay with them till july is not sure yet. but we seem to understand as very well and we seem to like each other.
the following sunday i spent the day in wellington ( oh my god. i love this city!) with other AFSers. we went to a italinan restaurant which was a very stylish. after that i went to eliane which is an other swiss AFSer who lives in the hills right above wellington downtown. im doing a trip with her to auckland by train (a 12 hours trip which is said to be incredible. train fanatics from all over the world come to NZ to do this trip). we had to search for a place to stay in auckland for we cant sleep in hotels or hostels without our host parents. we can now stay at the house of elianes host fathers sister. im so looking forward to doing this trip.
i had a math exam last wednesday. it was about probability and stuff. it was not difficult and i passed it. they dont have marks around here. there is just a letter u get on top of ur exam which is either E(excellent), M(merit), A(achieved) or N(not achieved).
i cooked for the first time the evening after this math exam. i made fish and chips and a italian tomato salad with basil, mozzarella and balsamic. unfortunately there was no olive oil. but i can tell u it was very good and they all liked it. after the meal fiona micaela and i went to a school theatre performance. it was sketches from the monty python flying circus. some of them were funny some of them werent. we mainly went there because my host sister cherise had a role in it. but not a big one because she was sick and could not take part in all the rehearsals. thats why they gave lots of monologues to other students.
on thursday my host grandma had her 70th birthday and we went to the 'bell house', which is a very noble restaurant at the southern end of upper hutt, to celebrate that.
on friday i went to sues house because her daughter sarah organized a AFS movie evening with burger chips and movies.
on saturday sue passed by spontaneously picked me up and drove me to her house were i finally got MY BIKE!!! WITH HELMET(is compulsory here)!!! its an absolute new bike and AFS-bought it for me. it still belongs to AFS but i can use it till i return in july. it is just me and johnson who wanted a bike because we had to decide whether we want to get the bus tickets reimbursed or whether we wanted a new bike. imagine how much freedom this is going to give me. oh my god no more waiting for the bus. it gives me around 40 minutes more sleep every day!!! i can explore all of upper hutt now without depending on where the bus is driving to.
the same evening i went to church in wellington where katharina one of the sisters who dont live at home anymore sung in a young peoples service. it was awesome. different from what we call a young peoles service. it was from young people to young people in a very modern environment. it was full (at least 300 students). i didn agree to all they said but it was a great experience for sure.
so u see im pretty busy so please do not take it personal when i dont always answer u personally. thank u so much for all ur postcards, letters and e-mails. dario

PS: thank you so much mamuschka for translating my posts!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://newsfromnewz.blogspot.com/2007/09/my-september-pretty-much-all-of-it.html' title='My September. which are some kind grain bars which are eaten with milk and sugar (mmh...). then i make my lunch. this is most of the days three toast sandwiches with peanut butter and berry jam and two nut bars for the morning tea. at 7.50 i leave the house with my school bag of course. i then go and pick up johnson (exchange student from hong kong). he lives one road away from my house. we then make our way to upper hutt station which is a small train station from which we use to leave to wellington. this is a 10 minute walk. at the station we enter the bus to ride it for about 10 more minutes. then we get out the bus again and walk past a primary school to upper hutt college which is a big school comparable with a swiss gymnasium. upper hutt college has around 1300 students and all of them wear a uniform except of me some other exchange students and all 13th year students. we are usually 10 minutes early so we often go to the school library before our first period starts. we have 5 periods every day and every period lasts for 1 hour (but often their just 50 minutes because it can take quite a while till everybody is seated). after period two we have morning tea which is actually just a big break. two more periods and and i can eat my lunch. i usually have it outside in front of the cafeteria. after i ate my lunch i always go to the library because thats one of the places where we can get internet access. after lunch time there is just one more period before school finishes at around 3.15 pm. i then go home. depending on my mood i spend more or less time in upper hutt 'city'. i have to say im very lucky because my school way leads through the city. so sometimes i go and put some money on my prepaid card or i go and buy something we need at home (eg. peanut butter or nut bars) and sometimes when im really, really hungry we go to mcdonalds which is a dangerous place because if you go there too much u can loose lots of money. my day often ends at home where i first get the dried laundry in and fold it. the tv is often on. but i also read a lot. and i do my homework as im supposed to do. i go to bed (ooh i love my bed. its sooo comfortable) at around 10.30 pm.

so see u dario

its time for new news!

hello everybody.

its time for me to set up a new post. i had a lot of fun the last week!! one week ago we had an introduction camp up in taranaki which was organized by AFS. we drove in a van up to taranaki. it was a beautiful voyage with landscapes ive never seen before. all exchange students who live in the southern part of the northern island were there. therefore i met lots of people from all over the world. we learned lots of things about new zealand and how to behave within our host family. lots of things i already knew from our introduction camp back in switzerland. one great thing about the camp was the haka. the haka is a traditional maori war dance which is very aggressive and good to let out all you anger against anything. this dance was originally danced by the maori before attacking an enemy tribe or the english settlers. its purpose was to strengthen themselves and simultaneously frighten the enemies. but it was only the boys who learned the haka for it is a thing which is not be practiced by girls. the girls learned an other dance which is less aggressive and contains a ball on a rope which they had to swing in a certain way. I also learned how to properly throw a rugby ball. this is not easy at all because you have to give it a spin in order to make it fly in a straight line.
i was in wellington for the first time last wednesday. i went there with my older host sister because school end early on wednesdays. we visited the tepapa museum which is according to her the best made museum in the southern hemisphere. and according to me to. now that ive been there. it is a museum which contains everything from art and history (new zealand and the whole world) to flora and fauna. it was really awesome. it takes me about 45 minutes to get to wellington by train. but it is a very comfortable ride and its only 3 dollars!!!! imagine that. i really love wellington its a real big city with high-rise buildings and lots of people and a beautiful old-fashioned european looking train station.
last saturday was the spring festival in upper hutt. this is comparable with a mixture of a big street market and a fairground. there were lots of stalls selling art, food, toys and clothes from china. i had to be there for AFS. our stall was an old ambulance car from WW2. because AFS means American Field Service which was the community of american medics in WW2. i had to distribute AFS-brochures among the visitors of the festival. It was the same day on which our cinema opened in upper hutt. it is a beautiful cinema with 4 screens (i havent watched a movie there yet but i wanted to see how it looks like). before that we had to go on a 30 minutes ride by bus to lower hutt. well ive never done that but ive been to lower hutt (i went to a chinese store with johnsons who is from hongkong) and its quite a long ride. after my service at the AFS-stall cherise and micaela took me to the skate park which is on the other side of the track system.
at 7pm. we left for the beach house to spend the night and the next day there. on sunday it was fathers day and tonys birthday. it was a beautiful but windy day and i swum in the tasman sea for the first time in my life. well you cant call it swim because it was very cold and it had a lot of waves. but i was inside it.
this week is exam week and i dont have to go to school because i just arrived here three weeks ago. thats why i have lots of time to write new posts.

so have a nice day all you swiss people and others. kind type='text'>schon wieder viel erlebt!

also meine lieben euch allen eine schoene zeit dario

gruess dario

WHAT ABOUT MY HOSTFAMILY

HALLO IHR TREUEN LESER.

ICH HABE ALSO SEIT VORGESTERN EINE GASTFAMILIE.
ES IST JEDOCH EINE WELCOMEFAMILY DAS BEDEUTET, DASS ICH
HÖCHSTENS 3 MONATE BEI IHNEN VERBRINGEN WERDEN.
